The Best Ways to Enjoy Sourdough

written by:

Sweet, Savory & Everything In Between

Fresh sourdough is a staple in our home. Since I bake every week for my microbakery, there’s almost always a loaf on the counter or tucked away in the freezer for later. It’s one of those little luxuries that never gets old.

One of my favorite parts about baking sourdough is creating seasonal flavors throughout the year. From savory loaves packed with herbs and cheese to fruity spring combinations and cozy fall favorites, every new recipe feels like a chance to discover another delicious pairing.

Over the years, we’ve found ourselves getting more creative with how we enjoy each loaf. Some days it’s as simple as warm bread with butter, while other days we’re building the ultimate sandwich, serving it alongside soup, or turning it into an appetizer for friends and family.

If you’re looking for new ways to enjoy sourdough, here are some of our favorite sweet, savory, and sweet-and-savory pairings that we come back to again and again.

Savory Pairings

Sourdough’s naturally tangy flavor makes it the perfect base for hearty meals, simple snacks, and impressive appetizers.

๐Ÿซ’ Olive Oil & BalsamicToasted sourdough dipped into extra virgin olive oil, aged balsamic vinegar, cracked black pepper, and flaky sea salt. Perfect as an appetizer.
๐Ÿฅ‘ Avocado ToastMashed avocado topped with everything bagel seasoning, red pepper flakes, or a fried egg.
๐Ÿฒ Soup CompanionPair with tomato soup, French onion, broccoli cheddar, chicken noodle, creamy potato soup, beef stew, or chili. The crusty bread is perfect for dipping.

๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ณ Bรกnh Mรฌ-InspiredOne of my personal favorites! Toasted sourdough layered with cold-cut pork from the Asian supermarket, Kewpie mayonnaise, pickled carrots and daikon, fresh cilantro, sliced jalapeรฑos, and a drizzle of Maggi seasoning. Growing up in a Vietnamese family, bรกnh mรฌ has always been one of my favorite sandwiches, and this sourdough version is such a fun twist.
๐Ÿงบ Charcuterie BoardsServe alongside Brie, goat cheese, prosciutto, salami, olives, roasted nuts, fresh fruit, and fig jam for an effortless appetizer spread.

Don’t Forget the Leftovers

One of the best things about sourdough is that even after a few days, it’s still incredibly useful in the kitchen.

If your loaf starts to dry out, don’t toss it. Instead, transform it into something new!

Final Thoughts

One loaf of sourdough can become breakfast, lunch, dinner, appetizers, snacks, and even dessert. That’s one of the reasons I love baking it so much. Every loaf has the opportunity to become something completely different depending on what’s in your fridge and what you’re craving that day.

I hope these pairing ideas inspire you to get creative in the kitchen and maybe even try a few combinations you wouldn’t have thought of before. Whether you’re enjoying a classic country loaf or one of my seasonal sourdough flavors, there’s no wrong way to enjoy fresh bread.

Happy baking, and happy eating!
